[UPDATE] Local Lawmakers Mourn Death of Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch.

Local lawmakers today are mourning the death of former New York City mayor Ed Koch, who continued to be outspoken on many issues in the city and throughout the state up until his death at age 88.

- Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla:

"I was saddened to learn of Mayor Koch's passing. I had the good fortune to attend a few events where he spoke or attended. 

"You always knew when Ed Koch was in the room. He was a man who was literally larger than life. He was outspoken, always very proud to be a New Yorker, and always upbeat about our future. His always-upbeat attitude inspires me to this day. 

"Of course, you have to make sound plans and work hard to overcome obstacles and make those inspirational dreams become a reality. And they do!"

- U.S. Rep Nita Lowey (D-Harrison), Ranking Democrat on the Appropriations Committee:

“I am saddened by the passing of Mayor Ed Koch, a loyal friend, great supporter, remarkable public servant, and legendary New Yorker.  Ed Koch’s contributions in Congress and as Mayor were pivotal in New York’s development into the vibrant, safe, prosperous, and one-of-a-kind city that we know today.  Just earlier this week, I had the opportunity to attend the moving tribute to his life of public service.   Ed’s ability and enthusiasm for engaging and connecting with New Yorkers will not be forgotten, nor will his commitment to the U.S.-Israel relationship.  His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.”

- Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino:

“New York has lost one of its greatest champions.  Government reform has lost one of its loudest voices.  Israel has lost one of her strongest defenders.  It’s a terribly sad day but we take heart in all that was gained in the long, full and impactful life that Mayor Ed Koch led.”

Koch died today at 2 a.m., with spokesman George Arzt saying he died from congestive heart failure. Koch was admitted to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital on Monday.

A funeral is set for Monday at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan.

Koch fought a variety health problems and heart disease after completing his time in office in 1990. He remained a leader in Democratic politics and was outspoken on many issues.
