Since the advent of the state property tax cap and limited state aid, districts like Port Chester face deficits and potentially painful cuts.

But most of the talk has been in the abstract. Today, Assemblyman George Latimer will meet with students from Port Chester High School and Port Chester Middle School, to answer their questions about how local and state budget woes could impact things like school sports, music programs and academics.

At the urging of the district, parents and taxpayers in Port Chester engaged in a letter-writing campaign, hoping the feedback would help Latimer and state Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer secure more cash for the district, which faces a budget shortfall in the millions. 

But Latimer has also heard from students who took the time to write, and this morning he hopes to address some of their concerns in person. Latimer will meet with 38 middle school students at 9 a.m. today, before heading to Port Chester High School to meet about 25 high school students at 10 a.m. After a short talk by the assemblyman, students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the budget process and how it will impact them.
